Who are Peer Providers?

A Peer Provider is an individual that has recovered from mental illness and or addiction. A Peer Provider may additionally be a  colleague of work or a community-based organization or foundation. Peer providers include a parent or a caregiver. Peer Provider Leadership Development offers peers an opportunity to support other peers, share knowledge and experiences. A peer provider (e.g., certified peer health coach) is a person who uses their personal experience of endurance or recovery plus skills learned in formal training of mind-body practices to deliver services (e.g., behavioral health settings or community health centers) to promote mind-body recovery and resiliency.

Framework

Health coaches apply action-oriented goal management working with mind-body methods to support a healthcare practitioners’ goal or treatment plan. They may additionally implement a stress reduction goal plan working with peer employees or individuals of community-based organizations. Health Coaches are the front-line representatives to support patients and clients. Health Coaches anchor goals and creates objectives to support goals. Health Coaches provide peers an individualized approach to identify specific concerns related to health conditions or illness or experiences peer face. Health coaches implement emotional support, mind-body practices, and support (endurance, recovery, stamina) goal success. Health coaches utilize goal setting, mind-body practices in an objective to remove stressors and use of personal support systems. The relationship between the coach is an accountability partnership focused on the health goals assigned by work ethics and/or healthcare practitioners. Health coaching guides individuals to talk about troubling concerns about their conditions or experiences. Health Coaches help individuals identify what they most want to change, and provide the support to foster change, identifying stress triggers and obstacles, or difficulties that must be eliminated or lessened to encourage optimal health outcomes and healthy behaviors. Health Coaches draws on the principles from positive psychology and appreciative inquiry, and the practices of motivational interviewing and goal setting. Health coaching is the use of evidence-based skillful conversation, clinical interventions and strategies to actively and safely engage client/patients in health behavior change. Health coaches do not diagnose, interpret behavior or beliefs, or clinically advise patients on what to do Wolever et al., (2016).

Peer Health Care Coaches can support enrollees on a broad range of topics including lifestyle factors for health & wellness, behavioral health, nonnarcotic alternatives, drug and alcohol, addictions, stress reduction, metabolic syndrome, smoking cessation, maternity care ( pregnancy stress reduction and high-risk management), community centers, family services,  pain management,  non-pharmacological approaches and symptom management (disabilities, illness, mental health disorders and medication side effects). Accordingly, Peer Health Coaches have all undergone substantive training.


Promote self-management skills through stress reduction, motivational interviewing, goal setting, and peer support.
